The Multiplicity Project

For the cultural hybrid.

The Multiplicity Project aims to iterate the problems that mixed people face in our society and ultimately reflect the larger problem of race stigmatization in American society as a whole. Our tendency as humans to make judgments about people based on what society teaches us – through the media and often through public education – is at the root of much of the racial tension in America.

WHAT ARE YOU?

“What Are You?” is a photo-interview series that gives multiracial women a space to respond to this question truthfully and in a way that transgresses the expectations of many of the people who ask it. The goal of the project is to empower women to express their identities freely and without the influence that societal pressures may have on them.

Too often, mixed women are either invisible or classified as exotic in their representations, rather than being recognized and valued as individuals. Each photograph features a young American woman who faces daily pressures – however minute or large – to identify herself in one way or another. In order to rise above the objectification and generalizations that are so commonplace in American culture, it is paramount that we ask not “what are you?” but “who are you?”

A Portrait-Interview Series

“I firmly believe that you find your identity better in a collective. Yes, I understand being your individual self. Being true to yourself. Finding your own personal journey. But finding your own personal way really helps when you have an entire lineage and culture behind you that gives you support and direction.” -A. Grant
